An United States based manufacturer, Athearn concentrates its operations in model train equipment and locomotives production. The company started out with a low level O-scale layout and after getting much response to it, focused its attention on the HO Scale market in the year 1946. Currently, most of the production and distribution is handled by the Horizon Hobby, Inc

Its major moves included acquisition of Globe Models product line, and some developments and experiments in this line led to a better series of products. Electrical power, and improvements in locomotives and freight cars was a part of this effort. Another important improvement was the Hi-F mechanism which distributed the load of the motor spindle amongst the wheels. This led to further innovation in the motor department, leading to usage ring magnet motors in their products.

Over the past 60 years, Athearn has served the modeling community with the best in line trains offered at the most reasonable price. The company went through a couple of changes in the ownership after the death of the founder, Irv Athearn, in 1991. Since 2004, all company operations and production rights have been resident with the Horizon Hobby, Inc. HO Scale Athearn Model Trains are some of the finest model trains on the market today.
